SURROUNDINGS

Bad Saarow is now Berlin's equivalent to the Hamptons, rich in tradition. As early as the 1920s, the spa town on Lake Scharmützel was a favored retreat for artists and entrepreneurs seeking respite from the city in their summer residences just an hour southeast of Berlin. Notable Berliners like Max Schmeling and Maxim Gorky frequently gathered here for sailing, golfing, and relaxation in Bad Saarow's grand hotels and moor spas. With picturesque buildings from that era, surrounded by an extensive nature reserve, the abundant leisure and wellness offerings, fine dining, and growing cultural scene once again draw urbanites to the "Märkisches Meer", as Theodor Fontane once called it.
